«Did you know that the largest rodent in the world lived in Uruguay?» With this question, the book “Giants Underground. Mysterious Animals from Our Past” invites children to learn about some of the animals that lived in what is now Uruguay millions of years ago. Its pages not only contain interesting facts – such as that the Arazatí resort in San José is a place rich in fossils – but also provide an insight into what paleontologists do in Uruguay and the discoveries they have made in eastern lands.
The story begins when Sofia goes on holiday to San José with her cousin Lucas. There, they meet a group of paleontologists who introduce them to their task. With them, they find a tooth buried in the sand and set out to discover who it belonged to. It is the perfect excuse to discover the ancestors of the country's native animals, which are hidden underground.
The characters discover everything from what a fossil is to what types of animals have been found over the years and what to do if you find a bone. In these situations, the recommendation is to call an expert, either from the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) or the Faculty of Sciences.
